About Me
 
 
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Dietitian, and Licensed Massage Therapist.  My professional responsibilities have included working with individuals and groups; teaching; writing; speaking; clinical research; media work; and designing and implementing programs related to diabetes, disordered eating, and wellness. For the last 16 years, I have focused on working in-depth with individuals struggling with eating and weight-related problems; endocrine disorders; depression and anxiety-related conditions; effects of trauma; and chronic medical conditions.










    
 I earned both my bachelor and master’s degrees in Nutrition at Texas A&M University, and completed my dietetic internship at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas in 1994.  I have had extensive experience working as a Registered and Licensed Dietitian (License # DT06366) in a variety of clinical, outpatient, and wellness settings, and earned the credential of Certified Diabetes Educator within my first few years of practicingFrom the time I completed my dietetic internship, I have also pursued training in counseling, psychology, and  body-centered therapies.  In 2001, I began training through the HANDLE Institute in Seattle, Washington, to provide neurological screening and programs designed to support healing and strengthening of the nervous system, and became a Certified HANDLE Screener in July 2004. In May 2005, I completed training at the Lauterstein-Conway Massage School in Austin, Texas, to become a Licensed Massage Therapist (License # MT045602). In May 2009, I graduated from Texas State University with a master's degree in Health Psychology. I am licensed in the state of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor (License # 65738).

I have extensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, which offers help to people struggling with destructive behaviors and relationship problems; and am a graduate of training in the Hakomi Method, a body-centered therapy that faciliates nonjudgmental self-awareness and transformation of problematic core beliefs and behavioral patterns.  I also am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) and have completed the Intermediate level of training in Somatic Experiencing; both of these are neurobiological models of trauma processing.  Additional training and continuing education opportunities that I participate in include subjects such as attachment, integrative health care, clinical hypnosis, and advanced biochemistry and physiology. I have also completed the curriculum to become a Certified Clinical Nutritionist, which includes training in herbal and homeopathic therapies, functional testing, and education in therapeutic applications for vitamin and mineral supplementation. In addition to maintaining my private nutrition practice, I am affiliated locally with Hill Country Recovery Center (www.hillcountryrecoverycenter.com), which provides comprehensive outpatient services to people with disordered eating.  For my full resume, please click on this link:  Kara's Resume.
